Salini Impregilo enters new infrastructure sector in Australia: on shortlist for Western Sydney Airport contract

Milan, November 30, 2018 - Salini Impregilo is on the shortlist for a contract to deliver a major earthworks package for Western Sydney Airport, one of Australia's most significant infrastructure projects in decades.

Salini Impregilo, which is operating in the country in other transport sectors, has been shortlisted to perform the first package of bulk earthwork and related works including soil decontamination, relocation of utilities and landscaping to prepare for the construction of the airport.

Western Sydney Airport is expected to award the contract in mid-2019 with the airport scheduled to open in 2026, serving both domestic and international flights. It will provide additional aviation capacity to meet growing demand in Sydney. The first stage of the airport will include a single 3.7-kilometre runway and terminal and airport facilities to serve up to 10 million passengers a year. The airport has a blueprint for staged growth to cater for 82 million passengers a year by the 2060s.

Salini Impregilo has a long experience in airport construction, with its latest projects located in Lima and Dubai.

In Lima, the Group and its consortium partners won in September a design and construction tender that will lead to the expansion of the Jorge Chavez International Airport, one of the largest airports in South America.
The project includes the construction of a second runway and a passenger terminal, enabling the airport to serve 30 million passengers a year.

In Dubai, Salini Impregilo’s U.S. subsidiary, Lane Construction, is working on the expansion of the Al Maktoum International Airport, which will allow it to serve 220 million passengers a year and become the biggest in the world in terms of size and passenger flow by 2050.

Salini Impregilo has done some of the most challenging projects in the world, such as the construction of the most southern airport in the world in Ushuaia, Argentina.

In Australia, the Group is investing heavily, participating in a number of tenders for big projects to increase its presence in the country and make it one of its key markets. In Sydney, it recently completed the skytrain bridge and viaduct for Sydney Metro Northwest, part of the biggest public transport project in the country. The bridge and viaduct won the 2018 Project of the Year award from Engineering News-Record (ENR), a leading U.S. trade magazine. In Perth, it is doing the Forrestfield-Airport Link to provide a better connection between the city centre and the suburbs.
